Just as the 20th century has seen many different portrayals of Jeanne in film, earlier centuries envisioned Jeanne d'Arc in many different portrayals in art. One of the first or early known art of Jeanne d'arc is probably the books of hours, Les Vigiles de Charles VII by Martial d'Auvergne. It is a long poem relating the dramatic events of the Hundred years War of and idealizing the diplomatic successes and military officers in the Guyenne and Normandie.

The manuscript was maybe conceived for the education of the young king, then placed under the guardianship of his on Anne of Beaujeu. The poem idealizes the heroism of Jeanne d'Arc.
